History of Arlington

Arlington County was originally part of the land that was surveyed for the country's capital city in 1791. Congress returned the land to Virginia in 1846. The land was called Alexandria City and Alexandria County until the county portion of the land was renamed Arlington County in 1920.

Arlington Schools

The public schools in Arlington are part of the Arlington Public Schools district. There are 22 elementary schools, six middle schools and five high schools. The standardized test scores of Arlington students are consistently higher than the national and state averages. Arlington's high school graduation rate is more than 90 percent, and most of these graduates continue their education after high school
