Sitting just across the Potomac from Washington DC, this city of 146,000 was surveyed by George Washington in the 1740s, and named for the prominent Alexander family. Education is this city is administered by the Alexandria City Public Schools system, which operates thirteen elementary schools, two middle schools, a 9th grade school, and a high school for grades 10-12. There are also several well-known private schools such as Commonwealth Academy if that's your preference. There are many attractions and sites that showcase this area's history as well, such as the George Washington Masonic National Memorial, Robert E. Lee's boyhood home, D.C's original southern cornerstone, and of course, Washington's home of Mt. Vernon on the southern end of town. There are also many great events that take place in Alexandria year-round, from the King Street Art Festival in early September, to several major events during the holiday season, and several farmer's markets scattered throughout the city to enjoy in warmer months.
