Beautiful Brookland

New Restaurants in Brookland
By: Tony Boehm

If you blinked, you might have missed the day when Brookland, DC became a nightlife destination. But don’t worry, you weren’t alone, and you’re not too late to be in the first wave of those discovering all the neighborhood’s new options. Brookland, always a great neighborhood to live in or visit your friend for a BBQ, is now also a spot for entertainment, arts, and dining. Spurred partially by the residential development and Arts Walk near the Brookland/CUA Metro Station, four new restaurants opened up in summer 2014 and your Brookland dining options keep on growing.

Let’s take a look at the new restaurants.

Brookland’s Finest – The first of the bunch to open in June 2014, Brookland’s Finest is nestled in the neighborhood on 12th and Jackson. They provide quality comfort food and carry a wide selection of beers on draft, with an emphasis on local DMV brews. All the sandwiches are great, and definitely try the Brussels sprouts chips and pretzel bites if you’re looking for a snack with your beer. Check out the great indoor/outdoor bar patio with stroller parking!

Brookland Pint – From the people that brought you Meridian Pint, Brookland Pint brings a new food and beer menu to Northeast DC. The beer menu is huge, with local beers, specialty brews, and meads. Get as much of your favorite while you can because the menu is highly rotational. The food is part fine dining, part southern, part family favorites. There is a pretty extensive late night menu as well.  The best part has to be the patio – a large space off the main street, perfect for dinner or late night drinks. 20017 residents make sure to check it out on Sunday evenings for Neighborhood Night discounts, and Tuesdays kids eat free!

Smith Public Trust – From the owners of Smith Commons, Smith Public trust is an eclectic mix of restaurant, bar, and public meeting place. The menu is full of comfort food (try the Red Velvet Belgian Waffles) and the beer options heavy on Belgians and wheats. The place itself is large and open. On any given day you might see a work party, a group of traditional English singers and dancers, or a DC Council member giving a speech. Check it out for brunch – make some new friends and enjoy a good meal.

Steel Plate – On 12th Street just south of Newton, Steel Plate is your standard neighborhood pub, if you’re lucky enough to have a neighborhood pub with excellent, creative food and a nice selection of local microbrews. One bar, one bartender, a few tables, a common area, and an upstairs for parties with a cool balcony overlooking 12th Street. It’s homey, but not cramped, a place that will probably remember your name if you go there more than once. Stop by for a happy hour drink and you’ll probably end up staying for dinner. (Hint: try the duck tacos)

Busboys and Poets – Everything you know and love about DC’s Busboys and Poets, now found in Northeast DC. Located right on Monroe and Michigan, Busboys and Poets will be busy for brunch, happy hour, and weekend dinners. No worries if you have to wait for a table, just grab a drink or check out a book in their reading area. The great food will be worth the wait.

Hälsa And now for something completely different, Hälsa. Meaning “health” in Swedish, Hälsa brings a health food option to Brookland. The term health food seems inadequate to describe the food and drink here. It is fresh, local, simple, yet thoughtfully composed. If that’s health food, count me in! On my first visit, there was literally half a pig being broken down with a saw directly behind the counter.

The bone broths pack a ridiculous amount of flavor in every sip. Don’t be afraid to just drink it down. Try the dashi with a poached egg. The market plate allows you to put together your own protein, base, side, and greens. Too many options to choose from.  Think high quality, healthy Chipotle. They also have a great selection of infused teas, so check it out for something light and refreshing or sit down and enjoy a satisfying meal.

So make a day of it or an evening of it. Meet up with friends or impress your date. Brookland has a lot to offer. Check out the Arts Walk and the Farmer’s Market. Many weekends have entertainment from concerts to salsa lessons. Head over to one of the new Brookland restaurants for dinner and cap it off with a drink at one of Brookland’s new bars. It’s not too late to experience one of DC’s newest hotspots before it gets too crowded!
