This is the home you've been looking for in Brookland! One of only 31 detached houses that backs up to expansive grounds of the Franciscan Monastery, this gem on 17th Street should be your forever home. On a tree-lined street, where neighbors do much more than just wave to each other on the way to work, this home impressively has it all.
Upon entry, find hardwood floors and detailed moldings throughout. Hang up your coat and drop your bags in the closet in the foyer and then move into the living room, where you are greeted by a fireplace framed by two windows; so warm and cozy it might even make you long for winter to return soon! A real dining room overlooks a bucolic backyard - in the heart of the city! - and is the perfect place to entertain. Friends and family will rave about the meals cooked in this amazing kitchen. With more counter space and storage than you've got dishes for, this is the heart of this amazing home. The addition off the back is a glorious light-filled breakfast space worthy of a real eat in kitchen.
Now step outside, look at the yard, listen to the birds, watch the deer and the occasional red fox scamper across the grounds of the Monastery. Peaceful is the only word that comes to mind. The custom bamboo fence frames the manicured yard and notice that it's green as far as your eye can see. This is an oasis in the city, and was even featured on HGTV after its "green" updates!
There is lots of space inside, including four bedrooms and three full bathrooms and a storage attic with pull down stairs. One bedroom is also on the main level and could be ideal when relatives come to stay and play tourist. The home has central AC and both modern and traditional touches are everywhere. The finished basement can be a media room, a playroom, or an in-law suite. There is a full bathroom here along with a laundry room and plenty of storage. It even has its own exit to the backyard. Need even more storage? The full attic, with original pull-down stairs, is perfect for all your treasures. All renovations were meticulously done and it shows!
Welcome home.
The Garden at 3722 17th Street
(By: the current owners)
We loved this home and the garden from first day we moved in. We were fortunate that the garden had been cared for, with roses, bulbs, herbs and a freestanding Wisteria. The area of the home that is now the breakfast nook, was a mud-room covered porch without a door and the stairs faced down the basement steps. We started by carving the flower beds into more natural undulating lines, planting shrubs, perennials and a dogwood (the year our daughter was born). As time went on, other issues started to become apparent; the back patio was being pushed up by the roots of a neighboring tree, the chainlink fence lacked all charm and year after year we fought the weeds out of the lawn and flower beds.
After renovating the covered porch as a breakfast nook, we decided to pull out the old patio and re-pour a new slab. When we noticed the difference in concrete (from the walkway), we decided to stain it and we couldn't be happier with the result.
We added two "climbing america" roses and an arbor, hoping to have them climb into and arch over the side entrance.
The Wisteria is one of our favorite focal points in the yard... every year, it rewards our heavy pruning with long panicles of their fragrant purple blooms. But the truth is, the garden has something going every season but winter. With all the plantings we've put in over the years it has a whimsical english garden feel.
In 2013, we gave up on the tired chain link fence - we knew we didn't want to have just any fence. When we found Cali-Bamboo we knew we found the fence for us. During the construction of the new fence, our lawn took a beating - so we decided to re-grade and re-sod the entire yard.
We will miss our cookouts with neighbors and friends on the back patio - looking over the monastery grounds, with the occasional deer and foxes. We hope that they new homeowners will enjoy and care for the home and garden as much as we have.
