Cleveland Park is bounded by Rock Creek Park, Wisconsin Avenue NW, Woodley Road NW, and Quebec and Tilden Streets NW.
Housing stock nestled among the neighborhood side streets is some of the most gorgeous in the city. Styles include Tudors, bungalows, Craftsmans, Victorians, and mission revivals, and many of the homes seamlessly blend historical traditions with new features. (There’s even a home designed by legendary architect I.M. Pei.) Impressive lawns and grounds add to the grandeur of the homes on display in Cleveland Park.
Venture closer to the neighborhood’s twin commercial thoroughfares—Wisconsin Avenue NW and Connecticut Avenue NW—and you’ll find handsome brick condominium buildings. Among the cozy, garden-style buildings you can choose from are Cleveland Terrace, Tilden Gardens, and Ordway Gardens.
Whether you’re living in a 6-bedroom estate or a 1-bedroom condo unit, you’ll find plenty of opportunity to appreciate the charm and peace-of-mind that comes with life in this lush neighborhood.
STREETCAR SUBURB
According to the Cleveland Park Historical Society, the neighborhood’s roots stretch back to the end of the 19th century and the emergence of “streetcar suburbs” on the edges of the District. Originally, the neighborhood was massive estate that went by the name of Pretty Prospects (later Rosedale). In 1886, President Grover Cleveland purchased a home in the area, thereby giving the neighborhood its current name.
Throughout the subsequent decades, the streetcars running along Wisconsin Avenue NW and Connecticut Avenue NW brought more attention to developers. The result: an exciting mix of architectural diversity that’s since become one of Cleveland Park’s most defining characteristics.
You can find Cleveland Park’s earliest homes from this phase along streets including Newark Street NW and Macomb Street NW.
A SENSE OF COMMUNITY
Some recent developments for Cleveland Park have sprouted along Wisconsin Avenue NW, along the neighborhood’s western border. Cathedral Commons, which opened in 2014, brought to Cleveland Park more contemporary, mixed-used development, including townhomes, apartments, and ground-floor retail. The development serves as a sort of sister commercial strip to the more historic stretch of Connecticut Avenue NW to the east.
But development in Cleveland Park hasn’t come at the cost of green spaces. Historic parks including the Rosedale Conservancy and Tregaron Conservancy are fiercely loved (and protected) by the community. The neighborhood also offers continued access to the paths (and wilds) of Rock Creek Park.
There’s an abiding sense of community in the neighborhood, now one of DC’s nationally registered historic districts. Organizations bringing neighbors together include the Cleveland Park Club, the Cleveland Park Historical Society, and the Cleveland Park Citizens Association.
Pick up the Red Line at the Cleveland Park Metro station on Connecticut Avenue NW. Take advantage of public transportation with Capital Bikeshare stations (and Metrobus stations) located on both sides of the neighborhood.
Relax with coffee and a sweet treat at Firehook Bakery & Coffeehouse. Try some Indian dishes and drinks in a hip setting at Bindaas Cleveland Park. Discover the wonders of Neapolitan pizza at 2 Amys and classic American dishes at Café Deluxe.
Explore nature in the Tregaron Conservancy and the Rosedale Conservancy. Check out books from the redesigned Cleveland Park Library. Catch a good flick at the AMC Uptown 1. Play basement pool at Atomic Billiards.
Pick up some Italian groceries for a homemade meal at the celebrated Vace Italian Delicatessen. Check out the neighborhood’s popular wine shop, Weygandt Wines. Choose from two pharmacies: CVS and Walgreens.
