Chevy Chase in DC is marked (roughly) by Rock Creek Park, 41st Street NW, Broad Branch Road NW, and Nebraska Avenue NW.
Houses in the Chevy Chase neighborhood span the full range of typical Washington housing styles, including Victorians, Tudors, and Cape Cods. Most of the homes are single-family homes and tend to feature well-maintained grounds and nicely appointed features that maintain a respect for history.
Front lawns and quiet side streets give the neighborhood a small-town vibe inside a larger urban setting. Well-respected schools in Chevy Chase include St. John’s College High School and Lafayette Elementary School.
Most of the well-established condominium buildings in Chevy Chase can be found along Connecticut Avenue (which is also the neighborhood’s main retail and transit thoroughfare). These include Jocelyn House Condominium, Chase Plaza Condos, and Chase Point Condo.
CALM AND VIBRANT
Before 1907, when Chevy Chase got its start as one of the many “streetcar suburbs” springing up around Washington DC, the area was primarily farmland. When it fell under the ownership of the Chevy Chase Land Company, the area began its evolution into middle-class neighborhood (thanks, in part, to the Chevy Chase streetcar line which connected the growing housing stock to downtown DC).
There’s a pervasive feeling of calm and contentment that lingers along the streets of this neighborhood. Nevertheless, while Chevy Chase is somewhat removed from downtown DC, there still exists a vibrant commercial energy that has only expanded and strengthened in recent years.
GREEN SPACES
The social backbone of the neighborhood, Connecticut Avenue NW, is where the neighborhood’s earliest homes and business emerged. The stretch continues to serve as a home base for residents’ needs, whether it’s supermarkets or public libraries or restaurants.
Chevy Chase also shares a boundary with nearby Friendship Heights, whose high-end shopping and dining offerings allow neighbors something of a Georgetown-style experience.
Part of what’s given the neighborhood it’s lasting charm is its deep connection to green spaces. The streets of Chevy Chase are peppered with parks and recreation centers, among them Chevy Chase Recreation Center, Lafayette Recreation Center, and Francis G. Newlands Park.
Of course, the star of the show is Rock Creek Park, which rests against the neighborhood’s eastern borders. Chevy Chase makes the perfect location from which to launch into a world of natural beauty. It is, in some ways, the perfect neighbor.
Choose between two Red Line Metro stations: Friendship Heights and Tenleytown. Catch a Metrobus and head straight downtown along Connecticut Avenue NW. Take your car crosstown along Military Road (and through Rock Creek Park).
Eat pizza (and play table tennis) at Comet Ping Pong. Grab everything from dinner to drinks to coffee and pastries at popular Connecticut Avenue NW haunts like Macon Bistro & Larger, Blue 44 Restaurant and Bar, and Little Red Fox.
Discover a world of adventure at Rock Creek Park. Swim laps at Wilson Aquatic Center. Enjoy summer concerts at Fort Reno Park and the farmers market near Lafayette Elementary School.
Pick up your next great read at the iconic Politics and Prose Bookstore. Snag your weekly groceries at local institution Magruder’s. Spend the day shopping all the stores you’ll need at The Shops at Wisconsin Place.
