Edgewood
Stand on the front steps of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception and what you’ll see across Michigan Avenue is the northern-most border of D.C.’s Edgewood neighborhood. This lush area – with its mix of rowhomes and apartment buildings and its blend of college life (from Trinity Washington University and The Catholic University of America) and local arts – offers a wonderful living experience in northeast D.C.
Recent years have seen some stunning growth in the neighborhood’s offerings. Chief among these are two recent developments that Edgewood shares with its neighbor, Brookland.
The first of these is the Arts Walk, an urban promenade where you can shop for local arts and crafts, drink coffee while you get your bike fixed, see a performance at Dance Place, and enjoy a bustling farmer’s market. Adjacent to the Arts Walk is the Monroe Street Market, with luxury apartments, trendy restaurants like Busboys and Poets and Brookland Pint, and shops including Wardman Wines and The Catholic University of America’s college bookstore.
While you’re in the neighborhood, make sure you grab a drink at two of the area’s trendiest watering holes. There’s the Dew Drop Inn, a popular dive where you can enjoy a beer while looking over the train tracks running along the eastern side of the neighborhood. Then, across Franklin Street, there’s Right Property Brewing Company’s production house and tasting room, where you can sample beers while staring at some of the most eclectic chalk murals in the city.
Edgewood puts you in close connection with the rest of the D.C., offering two stations on the Red Line at its northern and southern points, as well as quick access to Rhode Island Avenue, Michigan Avenue, and North Capitol Street. You’ll also have access to the Metropolitan Branch Trail, where you can jog, walk, or bike all the way down to Union Station.
Neighborhood schools include DC Prep Edgewood Elementary Campus and City Arts + Prep Public Charter School.
