A neighborhood whose origins are intricately linked to the Civil War, Fort Totten’s name comes from the eponymous defensive post built to protect D.C.’s northern boundaries from attack. Of course, the need for heavy artillery is long gone. What’s left now is something all the richer for the history surrounding it: a charming upper-northeast neighborhood that has quickly transformed into a comfortable, welcoming place to live.
Living right on the border between northeast and northwest D.C. – in the neighborhood’s detached or semi-detached homes, as well as in the more contemporary apartment complexes around the Metro station – gives you immediate access to some of the city’s newest hot spots.
There’s nearby Brookland and Takoma Park, each with their own bustling commercial strips featuring small businesses and restaurants. You’re also just a short drive (or, on a nice day, a decent walk) away from the adjacent Petworth neighborhood, whose Upshur Street strip is home to great bars (including Petworth Citizen & Reading Room, which hosts literary-themed cocktail nights), an independent bookstore (Upshur Street Books), and trendy eateries (including Taqueria del Barrio). For more general shopping and grocery services, there’s a Walmart right off Riggs Road.
In addition to the Civil-War-era earthwork (which you can still walk through), there’s more history to appreciate. In fact, your neighbors are other historic sites that add layers of depth to Fort Totten. Among these: Rock Creek Cemetery, whose hallowed grounds offer both amateur tours of D.C. history and intriguing architectural features, and President Lincoln’s Cottage, used by Lincoln as his “summer White House.”
True, it’s a different sort of history from what you’ll find right downtown. But it’s also a history that’s all the more rewarding for being right in your own backyard.
