In recent years, D.C.’s Petworth neighborhood (which, when you’re considering area, is the city’s largest neighborhood) has become a lively anchor for both classic D.C. rowhomes and newer apartment and condo buildings that have sprung up along Georgia and New Hampshire Avenues. The result: an eclectic mix of urban hustle and residential quiet that’s become one of northwest D.C.’s most popular places to live and play.
Looking for things to do in the neighborhood? There’s no shortage of activities to fit a variety of interests.
If you’re interested in public parks for lounging, reading, and picnicking, you’ll have two neighborhood circles from which to choose: Sherman Circle Park and Grant Circle Park, as well as the fun playgrounds and water features at Petworth Playground and Petworth Spray Park.
If you’re looking for unique dining and drinking experiences, you’d be best served spending an evening hopping along Upshur Street, home to trendy bars and restaurants including Petworth Citizen & Reading Room, Hank’s Cocktail Bar, and Slim’s Diner. (While you’re there, don’t forget to stop by Upshur Street Books, one of the city’s independent bookstores.)
There’s also a wealth of options in the neighborhood for everyday shopping, whether it’s pet supplies or groceries, including a Yes! Organic Market, an Annie’s Ace Hardware, and a Safeway.
School options in the neighborhood are plentiful as well. At the western edge of Petworth, you’ll find Theodore Roosevelt High School and Bancroft Elementary School.
You’ll also find access to the woodland wonders of Piney Branch Park, a veritable natural oasis in upper northwest D.C. For a different, more hallowed outdoor adventure, take a trip to the eastern edge of the neighborhood for an illuminating, historically enlightening walk along the grounds of Rock Creek Cemetery.
