The Gardens at 3610 24th ST
When the current owners first laid eyes on this lovely Craftsman style Bungalow in 2006, they were immediately smitten with it. The yard, however, did not match the charm of the house. The landscaping consisted of only a few old shrubs, an old fence and a rose bush. So they immediately set to work to make the outside environment complement the warmth and livability of the inside. They decided to create a welcoming front yard with lots of curb appeal that would be a joy to see when returning home each day, and a multifunctional backyard that incorporated both outdoor living space and utility while being easy to maintain. The planted environment starts right on the easement where small Butterfly Bushes, ornamental grasses and a lovely little cherry tree wait to great you at the end of a long day. It’s common to see lots of beautiful butterflies on the bright
flowers of the bushes during much of the season, and the flowers of the Cherry Tree are always the earliest heralds of springtime – blooming before anything else. Then as you enter through the gate of the maintenance free white picket fence there are more ornamental grasses of three different species to enjoy. You have clear views of the Nandina shrubs and large flowering Wisteria on either side of the house against the fence line.
The star of the show, however, is the Weeping Cherry.
To the left you will see splashes of color all year long from some of the flowering plants (including Black-eyed Susans) that are part of the environmentally friendly Bayscaping that was installed in conjunction with the District’s Department of the Environment.
You’ll also notice one of two rain barrels – both help prevent storm water runoff and can be used as a low cost way to water the garden. The entire front is illuminated in the evening by energy efficient low voltage LED lights that turn on and off automatically. If you continue on the walk around the house you will enter the main garden behind its sturdy privacy fence with raised hedges of Wisteria and Trumpet Vine that provide a wall of flowers most of the season.
This area is a relaxing outdoor living space complete with multiple seating areas, a fire pit, and a place to put the grill. This private area will welcome you in with the gentle sounds of trickling water from the fountain or your favorite music on the outdoor sound
The expansive patio is set in stone dust and not concrete so water can pass through instead of running off or pooling. Gather with friends under the waterproof freestanding gazebo or around the fire pit. The three main plazas of the patio provide enough space to host 15 or more people comfortably.
The edge of the formal seating area is framed in part by flowering vines growing on a custom trellis. This trellis was made with reclaimed materials including twice-distressed
From here you can go through the Victorian arch and along a stone path past Butterfly Bushes to enjoy the fragrant sent of blooming Lilac or to pick blackberries, grapes, apples, or pears from any of the myriad of fruiting plants mixed amongst the ornamentals.
The path will eventually lead you to a spacious separate side yard perfect for providing an outdoor space for dogs or for storage of garden materials. The entire garden can be lit up at night using the two-zone low voltage lighting system. There is also buried soaker hose to make watering a breeze.
Other garden features include:
The Pyracantha Espalier that flowers beautifully in the fall (a product of 6 years of pruning).
The Pampas Grass that has huge flowers from late summer into winter. A Flowering Clematis outside of the potting shed, and three Grape Vines – including one so close to the seating under the gazebo that you can reach up and grab a grape during your meal.
Finally, after enjoying the abundance of the garden, you can walk down another hidden stone path adjoining the garage to the back gate. One last surprise will be waiting for you here. Even the back fence line along the alley is filled with flowers including Tiger Lillies, Liriope, and Trumpet Vine!
