Memories of running through rows of pine trees with my siblings, scalding my tongue with (flaming) hot apple cider and my father swearing under his breath while strapping a 10-foot tree to the top of the family car are near and dear to my sentimental, holiday-loving heart. In my family, Christmas music was strictly prohibited until after Thanksgiving, and bringing home the Christmas tree stood as the official, “Ok, go!” of the seasonal festivities. After that, it was safe to say that Santa was on his way, the end of school was nigh and cups of holiday cheer could be shamelessly guzzled until January 2nd. Kick off your holiday season with a trip to one of these DC area tree farms to cut your own tree. Bring it home, light it up and go ahead - pour yourself a cup of cheer.

The Linden Hill Christmas Tree Farm invites you to choose and cut your own tree from a field of White Pine, Norway Spruce, Douglas Fir and Concolor Firs. The farm offers equipment and assistance in cutting your tree free of charge and also sells pre-cut Maryland trees for those who prefer to leave the hacking to someone else. Trees are about $10/foot depending on quality and a handful of “ugly” trees are available at discount prices. Warm up with warm drinks and goodies at the snack shack before you head home.

Milltown Creek Tree Farm is a family owned and operated tree farm offering a variety of pre-cut and choose and cut Spruce, Fir and Pine trees to brighten your home this season. The farm provides the saws, tree cars, bailing and twine free of charge, -just show up bundled up for tree cutting fun. Snap photos of your little ones in front of the life-sized Christmas cartoon cut-outs, take home handmade ornaments from the gift shop and sip compleimentary hot cider to warm your bones.

Evergreen Acres is an organic farm featuring a pumpkin patch and cut your own tree farm when the cold weather and holidays come to town. Pick out the perfect White Pine, Scotch Pine or Norway Spruce (priced by type $45-65 regardless of size), chop it down and tote it to the sales shed to have it shaken and baled. Saws and help lugging and loading are available. Enjoy complimentary hot cider and wagon rides and feel free to bring your furry friend - leashed dogs are welcome at Evergreen Acres.

Middleburg Christmas Tree Farm prides itself on being the oldest and largest tree farm in Loudoun County. Come cut your own Norway Spruce, Colorado Blue Spruce, Douglas Fir or Concolor Fir with your family and the help of Middleburg’s friendly staff. Tree carts, saws, twine, bows and greenery are available free of charge and you are invited to make a day of it by bringing a picnic lunch.

Naughty Pine Nursery is a family-run nursery and Christmas tree farm offering Blue Spruce, Norway Spruce and Douglas Firs up to 12 feet tall from $50-100. The farm also offers seasoned oak firewood ($200/cord) to warm your home when Jack Frost looms. Check the website for recommended routes from all over the DC area then bundle up your crew and go!

Perhaps the sweetest little farm around, Pruitt’s Little Farm awaits you and your family with beautiful Scotch Pines, Norway Spruce and Blue Spruce Christmas trees (up to 12 feet; $50-70). Bring your pup! Free treats and a designated doggy potty area will be available. After you choose and cut the perfect tree with assistance from the friendly staff at Pruitt’s, gather around the parlor stove for complimentary hot cocoa and candy canes.
The Maryland Christmas Tree Association and the Virginia Christmas Tree Growers Association both offer guides to choose and cut and retail lots in your area.
