Halloween in the City

With so much history and fodder for ghosts, it's only fitting that DC knows how to do Halloween right! Whether you are looking for something to scare your socks off or a more child-friendly version, the DC area has the perfect spooktacular event for you. Please note that the government shutdown may affect the availability of some attractions, such as Congress, the scariest of them all!

Congressional Cemetary:

Dead Man's Run         October 19  5:30pm-8:30pm
Where better to start our list than a 206 year old cemetary? Lucky for you, the cemetary offers two Halloween-themed events this year. See if you can outrun Goblins, Ghouls, and the Grim Reaper at this fun race that begins with the toll of a funeral bell. Reward for surving the race? A beer tent to revive your 'spirits'. Prizes will be awarded for best costume (or team costume). Best part of it all, proceeds benefit the cemetary, which is a National Historic Landmark.

Ghosts and Goblets Soiree     October 26, 8pm
Ghouls just want to have fun! And they do with this party amongst the dead. General admission is $60 and includes: admission to the party, 4 drink tickets (good for your choice of spirits), guided twilight tours of the cemetary (there are no sparkly vampire.....we think), heated tent, and live entertainment. VIP admission for $80 includes all of the above plus premium Halloween cocktails in the Public Vault.

National Museum of the American Indian:

Dia de los Muertos  October 26, 27  10:30am
Who says you can't have fun and learn something at the same time? Join the National Museum of the American Indian for their Dia de los Muertos ("Day of the Dead") celebration. Learn about the Latin American roots of this centuries old tradition that celebrates the lives of those departed and welcomes the return of their spirits. NOTE: This event will NOT take place if the government shutdown is still in effect.

Boo at the Zoo:
This is easily the most enjoyable event with kids.  Get your tickets early as this sells out FAST! The National Zoo does Halloween right. Lights, princesses, wizards, lions, tigers & bears... and enogh free candy to frighten the parents...

Labyrinth Games & Puzzles:

Taste of Horror! October 26   10am-10pm
For  a more family-friendly version of a fun Halloween event, join the folks at Labyrinth for their annual Spooky Game Festival. 10am-5pm you can find spooky board games set up for play on a first come, first serve basis. From 6pm-10pm the atmosphere switches to RPG games, which you can RSVP for in advance. Prizes will be given out for best costumes, so get creative!

While this is admittedly a bit of a drive from the city, Kings Dominion offers a great family-friendly Halloween event in Planet Spooky. Snoopy, Charlie Brown, and the rest of the gang put on a fun street party, with loads of fun Halloween-themed activites perfect for little ghouls.

Capitol Hill's premier Halloween event for little ghouls. This annual spooky extravaganza takes place in front of Eastern Market and is one of the best community events in the city. Hayrides, moon bounces, candy, oh my! Neighborhood fun for children and parents alike. FREE admission.

Fields of Fear: Fridays and Saturdays through November 2. 7:30-11pm
Visit Cox Farms in Centreville, VA for the DC-area's scariest fields. With three different attractions over 20 acres, who knows what's hiding out there? Brave enough to find out? $13 will get you admission to the Firegrounds and unlimited Dark Side Hayrides. $19 gets you all of the above plus admission to Cornightmare, a 3/4 mile walk through a dark cornfield that will make you scream.
