Woodridge

The general borders of Woodridge are Shepherd Street NE, South Dakota Avenue NE, Bladensburg Road NE, and Eastern Avenue NE.

Housing stock in the neighborhood makes you feel like you’re in a quintessential slice of American suburbia. Most of the beautiful homes (both attached and detached) in this neighborhood come with generous lawns and front porches, as well as plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms (in some instances, up to five each).

Housing styles to choose from include bungalows, ranchers, and colonials. Many of the older properties have been renovated and updated with the luxuries and amenities of 21st-century living.

Tucked away among the delightful properties in Woodridge are several churches, including McKendree United Methodist Church and Sharon Baptist Church. There are also plenty of school options, including Perry Street Prep and Woodridge Elementary, as well as other schools in nearby Brookland and North Michigan Park.

FROM FARMS TO BUNGALOWS

What today is a magnificent, charming northeast neighborhood was originally developed from farmland and railroad warehouses.

As with other neighborhoods the city, Woodridge grew over the years thanks to easy access from railroads and street cars. With this transportation came the development of the bungalows and rowhomes that are characteristic styles of the neighborhood.

Woodridge’s history is linked with those of surrounding neighborhoods, including Brookland and Langdon. Like Brookland, Woodridge became home to several Catholic institutions, including the Missionaries of Charity Convent.

A BOOM IN BUSINESS

The neighborhood’s two commercial strips, Rhode Island Avenue NE and Bladensburg Road NE, continue to provide retail opportunities and community services to residents.

Recent years have seen a boom in local businesses setting up shop in and around the neighborhood, including local brewery DC Brau and local chocolatier Harper Macaw. The light-filled Woodridge Community Library, one of the neighborhood’s more recent additions, has fast become a nexus of learning and an architectural marvel in its own right.

Move

Enjoy easy access to major roads including Rhode Island Avenue NE and South Dakota Avenue NE. Get across town on several Metrobus routes, or take them to the Rhode Island Avenue or Brookland Metro stations.

Dine

Get your caffeine fix with espresso and coffee drinks (and maybe a quick snack) at Zeke’s Coffee. Taste local (and exclusive) beers from DC Brau at their brewery. Pick up an impressive deli sandwich from Subbs by Carl.

Live

Spend a relaxing day outside at Barnard Hill Park or nearby Langdon Park Pool. Seek out some quiet study time at Woodridge Neighborhood Library. Take Fido out for some exercise at the Langdon Dog Park.

Enjoy a short drive to the Shops at Dakota Crossing—including the city’s only Costco Wholesale. Grab your groceries from community staple Good Food Markets.
