2014 Brookland House and Garden Tour Video.

Wow!  What an awesome tour this year.  We had a great time at the 2014 Brookland House and Garden Tour run by the Greater Brookland Garden Club, and the after-party, with live Jazz band, lots of delicious local food from the restaurants on 12th street, at Jake's house, was so much fun.
Thank you to all the homewoners who opened their houses and to all the volunteers who helped out.  Mary Pat, the president of the garden club, said "The purpose of the tour is not to raise money, but what money we do make at this event... is all put back into the community,  We fund some educational activities for local children: we create community gardens and then pass them on to new adoptive parents: and we train and equip…

 National Cherry Blossoms Festival 2014 in Washington DC

The 2014 National Cherry blossoms festival is in full swing and peak bloom is predicted for Saturday April 12th.  Walk on down to the Tidal Basin (get there early in the morning to avoid the crowds) and see what all the fuss is about.  Want to avoid the crowds completely?  There are lots of cherry trees all over town, We've spotted lots of them all over the Capitol Hill and Brookland Neighborhoods (the ones surrounding the Basilica are especially enchanting).  Enjoy Spring!

An Elemental Obituary

It is with deepest regret that I announce after 99,547 pot-hole filled DC miles, 73 parking tickets, 2 "snow emergency" towings, a run-in with a DC cop car and 8 sets of tires, my beloved ugly box of a car has moved on to the great smooth autobahn in the sky. It faithfully carried, without too much complaint, hundreds of happy home buyers, dozens of laughing children on car-pool runs, a few Senators, two dogs, a fish, and a moose head. 

Born from the demented brain of a Japanese designer (or schoolgirl) was one of the ugliest cars ever made. And yet, it found joy in having a normal life. DC Street Cars

Just before Christmas, something happened in DC that has not occured in over half a century: a streetcar was installed on tracks in the District. The often debated, and doubted (a city project run on time AND have enough funding? Crazy!), project finally gained some credibility. However, streetcars, in various forms, had been an integral part of city transportation for around 100 years. They began, in earnest, in 1862 as large cars on rails that were drawn by horses. The original line ran from the Capitol to the State Department, an important route as the country was embroiled in the midst of the Civil War in 1862. That time of year is upon us again. Restaurant Week. The week where budget concious gluttons can experience the joy of eating like the 1%. And what timing! Two weeks after the New Year, when everyone starts to give up on their resolutions to eat better, Restaurant Week comes swooping in to console the masses after their failed attempts.
